A major incident was declared at East Surrey Hospital after a chemical leak prompted key departments to be shut down.
Bosses have promised a “full investigation” into what caused the scare, late on Friday afternoon.
Surrey Fire and Rescue Service was alerted to a “chemical spill” at the Redhill hospital just after 5pm.
Chemical agent formalin, a liquid solution made with toxic formaldehyde gas, was spilled in the pathology department and part of the hospital had to be evacuated, the Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust said.
Within an hour, a major incident was declared. Accident and Emergency and the maternity units were closed to new patients and remained out of action for almost three hours.
